Proactive downtown work supports safety, wellbeing and community confidence

People should feel safe, supported and welcome when they live, work, and visit downtown Guelph. Supporting a safe and vibrant downtown remains a top priority for the Guelph Police Service, and officers continue to work proactively alongside community partners to connect individuals with appropriate services and supports, address concerns, and prevent illegal activity.

Between August 24 and September 4, officers:

• Responded to 481 occurrences in the downtown core, including 153 proactive occurrences initiated by police.
• Laid or issued 62 charges and tickets, with 54 resulting from proactive enforcement activity.
• Investigated 77 criminal offences as part of proactive policing efforts.

While enforcement remains an important tool, it is only one part of the Service's broader approach to community safety.

Officers regularly engage with residents, businesses and community organizations to increase visibility, address emerging issues and deter illegal or unsafe behaviour. Through collaboration with IMPACT mental health clinicians and other service providers, individuals are connected with health, housing and community supports when appropriate.

This coordinated approach recognizes that many community concerns are best addressed through a combination of prevention, social support, and enforcement, helping people receive the right assistance while allowing police resources to remain focused on the public safety needs of our citizens.
