Twelve people arrested in Homecoming investigation

The Guelph Police Service has arrested 12 people as part of its ongoing investigation into dangerous behaviour during the large, unsanctioned Homecoming gathering on Chancellors Way on Sept. 26.

To date, investigators have identified 12 individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 21, who they believe were involved in dangerous and illegal behaviour that put people and property at risk. Each is charged with assault with a weapon, causing a disturbance and two counts of mischief. One of the men also faces an additional charge of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon. All have been released with upcoming court dates.

Police are thanking members of the public who came forward with tips, photos and video. Their help was key to identifying many of the people investigators wanted to speak with and demonstrates that the behaviour seen in videos circulating online does not reflect the values of the community.

"A crowd does not provide anonymity and it doesn't protect anyone from the consequences of their actions,” said Guelph Police Chief Gord Cobey. “If you endanger people, property or first responders, we will hold you accountable. This isn't behaviour our community will look past, and the public's help has shown that."

Investigators are still working to identify several more people seen in videos from the gathering. Their photos can be viewed at guelphpolice.ca. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow. Police urge anyone who may be one of the individuals they are wishing to speak with to come forward.

Anyone who recognizes someone pictured or has video or information about criminal or dangerous activity during the gathering is asked to contact Detective Constable Cameron Keddie at 519-824-1212, ext. 7431, or ckeddie@guelphpolice.ca. Police also want to hear from anyone who was assaulted, needed medical treatment or had property damaged. (Occurrence number GU26065626)
